Matthew Twenty-Three

Jesus said, The religion scholars and Pharisees are competent teachers in God's law. You won't go wrong in following their teachings on Moses. But be careful about following them. They talk a good line, but they don't live it. They don't take it into their hearts and live it out in their behaviour.

... they package God's Law in bundles of rules, loading you down like pack animals.

... they take pleasure in watching you stagger under theses loads, and wouldn't think of lifting a finger to help.

... their lives are perpetual fashion shows.

... they love to sit at the head table at church dinners, basking in the most prominent position.

Jesus couldn't make it any clearer about the type of leaders were should not follow. It doesn't mean their teachings are all bad, providing they are teaching the truth of the Bible, but we should not strive to live like them.

We all have one Teacher, and that is Jesus. He is the only Life-Leader.

Don't set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let Him tell you what to do.

The rest of the chapter is Jesus calling out the Pharisees and religious scholars. I strongly encourage you to read it here.

How does this confrontation make you feel? What does it make you think about Jesus? Can you hear anger? Love? Compassion? Annoyance? Truth?

Are you following religion scholars or are you following Jesus? Are you believing everything you hear from our pastors or are you reading God's Word and hearing His truth for yourself?

Are you listening to the words of big-name preachers or listening to the words of God?

Who are you following?
